Narrative:
ATIS required 5 min call before engine start. During this call were cleared to taxi to base of tower and hold. Started engines and taxied west/O further clearance. While taxiing from east end of runway 7 for takeoff on runway 15, tower called and said he had been trying to call us. We reverified we had been cleared to taxi. Explained we did not respond to his calls because we were starting engines. Tower then cleared us (at that time, approaching base of tower) to cross runway 7 to runway 15. The taxiway a which parallels runway 15 on east side is rather hard to see. I did see it. As I looked forward again, I notified a 'warbird' parked across runway 15 on other side of field. Mentioned this to the other pilot and briskly taxied abeam of entrance to taxiway a. As I began slowing for a rather sharp 90 degree right turn to enter taxiway a to runway 15, tower called and said 'stop'. I stopped the aircraft completely. Tower then stated we were cleared to cross runway 7, not runway 15. (There was a falcon jet taking off on runway 15 which we both had also been watching.) we responded to tower that we did intend to cross runway 7 towards runway 15. Because of our rather fast taxi speed and late slowing for turn, tower thought we were going to taxi across active runway 15. A subsequent telephone call to tower on the return leg assured them we did see the falcon taking off and that we were not going to cross runway 15. We did stop well short of the 'hold line' for runway 15AND made a 90 degree turn to enter taxiway a. Tower, on the phone, suggested that we angle across runway 7 to enter taxiway a from now on. Contributing factors: 1) lack of good taxiway on east end of runway 7. Taxi is supposed to be via broken yellow line. 2) lack of clear taxiway to enter taxiway a parallel to runway 15. 3) my excessive speed for conditions. 4) attention diverted to warbird at important time. 5) unsure (for today) taxi clearance, prior to engine start.

Title: GND CTL BECAME CONCERNED THAT REPORTER ACFT WAS GOING TO TAXI ONTO ACTIVE RWY WITH LTT CLEARED FOR TKOF SO ISSUED STOP TAXI INSTRUCTIONS.
Narrative: ATIS REQUIRED 5 MIN CALL BEFORE ENGINE START. DURING THIS CALL WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO BASE OF TWR AND HOLD. STARTED ENGINES AND TAXIED W/O FURTHER CLRNC. WHILE TAXIING FROM E END OF RWY 7 FOR TKOF ON RWY 15, TWR CALLED AND SAID HE HAD BEEN TRYING TO CALL US. WE REVERIFIED WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO TAXI. EXPLAINED WE DID NOT RESPOND TO HIS CALLS BECAUSE WE WERE STARTING ENGINES. TWR THEN CLRED US (AT THAT TIME, APCHING BASE OF TWR) TO CROSS RWY 7 TO RWY 15. THE TXWY A WHICH PARALLELS RWY 15 ON E SIDE IS RATHER HARD TO SEE. I DID SEE IT. AS I LOOKED FORWARD AGAIN, I NOTIFIED A 'WARBIRD' PARKED ACROSS RWY 15 ON OTHER SIDE OF FIELD. MENTIONED THIS TO THE OTHER PLT AND BRISKLY TAXIED ABEAM OF ENTRANCE TO TXWY A. AS I BEGAN SLOWING FOR A RATHER SHARP 90 DEG RIGHT TURN TO ENTER TXWY A TO RWY 15, TWR CALLED AND SAID 'STOP'. I STOPPED THE ACFT COMPLETELY. TWR THEN STATED WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS RWY 7, NOT RWY 15. (THERE WAS A FALCON JET TAKING OFF ON RWY 15 WHICH WE BOTH HAD ALSO BEEN WATCHING.) WE RESPONDED TO TWR THAT WE DID INTEND TO CROSS RWY 7 TOWARDS RWY 15. BECAUSE OF OUR RATHER FAST TAXI SPEED AND LATE SLOWING FOR TURN, TWR THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO TAXI ACROSS ACTIVE RWY 15. A SUBSEQUENT TELEPHONE CALL TO TWR ON THE RETURN LEG ASSURED THEM WE DID SEE THE FALCON TAKING OFF AND THAT WE WERE NOT GOING TO CROSS RWY 15. WE DID STOP WELL SHORT OF THE 'HOLD LINE' FOR RWY 15AND MADE A 90 DEG TURN TO ENTER TXWY A. TWR, ON THE PHONE, SUGGESTED THAT WE ANGLE ACROSS RWY 7 TO ENTER TXWY A FROM NOW ON. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 1) LACK OF GOOD TXWY ON E END OF RWY 7. TAXI IS SUPPOSED TO BE VIA BROKEN YELLOW LINE. 2) LACK OF CLEAR TXWY TO ENTER TXWY A PARALLEL TO RWY 15. 3) MY EXCESSIVE SPEED FOR CONDITIONS. 4) ATTN DIVERTED TO WARBIRD AT IMPORTANT TIME. 5) UNSURE (FOR TODAY) TAXI CLRNC, PRIOR TO ENGINE START.
