Narrative:
Lost engine in cruise flight while under bradley approach control. Controller assisted in giving steer to nearest airport, engine regained partial power and I was cleared for a visual approach to runway 20 at brainard field and handed off to tower. After landing ground control asked if I had a pencil handy and I told them I was busy trying to keep the engine running while taxiing and would call them as soon as I got squared away. I then went and calmed down in the fixed base operation, had a soda and phoned home to let them know my situation. I then called the tower approximately 45 min after landing and they had me call bradley approach which I did. Bradley seemed concerned that I had not called right away and asked if everything was ok. I explained why it took so long and thanked them for their assistance in handling the situation. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter states that investigation of aircraft fuel system revealed the presence of some contamination in the carburetor system. He states that all preflight checks were normal and that operation of the aircraft has been normal since the incident.

Title: ENGINE FAILED DURING CRUISE. REQUESTED AND RECEIVED ATC PRIORITY HANDLING. PARTIAL POWER WAS RESTORED PRIOR TO LNDG.
Narrative: LOST ENGINE IN CRUISE FLT WHILE UNDER BRADLEY APCH CTL. CTLR ASSISTED IN GIVING STEER TO NEAREST ARPT, ENGINE REGAINED PARTIAL POWER AND I WAS CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 20 AT BRAINARD FIELD AND HANDED OFF TO TWR. AFTER LNDG GND CTL ASKED IF I HAD A PENCIL HANDY AND I TOLD THEM I WAS BUSY TRYING TO KEEP THE ENGINE RUNNING WHILE TAXIING AND WOULD CALL THEM AS SOON AS I GOT SQUARED AWAY. I EXPLAINED WHY IT TOOK SO LONG AND THANKED THEM FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE IN HANDLING THE SITUATION. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH REPORTER REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: REPORTER STATES THAT INVESTIGATION OF ACFT FUEL SYSTEM REVEALED THE PRESENCE OF SOME CONTAMINATION IN THE CARBURETOR SYSTEM. HE STATES THAT ALL PREFLT CHECKS WERE NORMAL AND THAT OPERATION OF THE ACFT HAS BEEN NORMAL SINCE THE INCIDENT.
