Narrative:

Cleared to descend to 10,000 MSL. Passing approximately 12,500 MSL, approach control advised us of light airplane traffic at 12 O'clock, opposite direction, level at 10,500' MSL, about 5 NM away. Not seeing the traffic we told the controller we would level off at 11,000'. Now all of this sounds simple enough and we made a reasonably intelligent decision to level off. My question is why didn't the controller tell us to level off. We might have been dumb a's for all he knew. This see and avoid nonsense is literally for the birds.
