Narrative:
During vectors and descent for ILS runway 23 approach to gso, nc. Approach controller advised 'turn 10 degree to right, descend and maintain 5000'.' I (PNF) acknowledged instructions and read back 'turn 10 degree to right, descend to maintain 5000'.' the controller acknowledged by readback with '(callsign) roger'. As aircraft was descending thru approximately 6000', the same ATC controller asked if we were assigned 7000'. I responded 'no, we're descending to 5000', that was the altitude I read back'. The controller then stated 'ok, no problem'. After landing, I telephoned the gso radar room supervisor to ask him if there had been a problem and specifically if there had been a violation. The supervisor I spoke with stated that the controller had assigned the aircraft 7000' but that I had read back 5000' and the controller had acknowledged the readback without any correction. The ATC supervisor stated that he would have to listen to the tapes to find out who was at fault and that there was no problem with the incident and that there would be no violation sought.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW BELIEVED THEY HAD RECEIVED DESCENT CLRNC TO 5000', READ BACK SAME, AND BEGAN DESCENT. CTLR ACKNOWLEDGED READBACK BUT INTENDED DESCENT TO 7000'.
Narrative: DURING VECTORS AND DSCNT FOR ILS RWY 23 APCH TO GSO, NC. APCH CTLR ADVISED 'TURN 10 DEG TO RIGHT, DSND AND MAINTAIN 5000'.' I (PNF) ACKNOWLEDGED INSTRUCTIONS AND READ BACK 'TURN 10 DEG TO RIGHT, DSND TO MAINTAIN 5000'.' THE CTLR ACKNOWLEDGED BY READBACK WITH '(CALLSIGN) ROGER'. AS ACFT WAS DESCENDING THRU APPROX 6000', THE SAME ATC CTLR ASKED IF WE WERE ASSIGNED 7000'. I RESPONDED 'NO, WE'RE DESCENDING TO 5000', THAT WAS THE ALT I READ BACK'. THE CTLR THEN STATED 'OK, NO PROBLEM'. AFTER LNDG, I TELEPHONED THE GSO RADAR ROOM SUPVR TO ASK HIM IF THERE HAD BEEN A PROBLEM AND SPECIFICALLY IF THERE HAD BEEN A VIOLATION. THE SUPVR I SPOKE WITH STATED THAT THE CTLR HAD ASSIGNED THE ACFT 7000' BUT THAT I HAD READ BACK 5000' AND THE CTLR HAD ACKNOWLEDGED THE READBACK WITHOUT ANY CORRECTION. THE ATC SUPVR STATED THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE TAPES TO FIND OUT WHO WAS AT FAULT AND THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE INCIDENT AND THAT THERE WOULD BE NO VIOLATION SOUGHT.
