Narrative:
Flight was cleared to dtw via cle 7 departure, radar vectors V297, maintain 5000, expect 16,000 10 minutes after departure. Departure frequency 118.9, squawk XXXX. Departure control 118.9 handed us off to 125.15 for routine departure. After checking in on 125.15, we were cleared to 8000'. Moments later, we were advised of an air carrier flight at 10 O'clock and 3-4 miles at 7000'. At this time we were at 6200' and then queried our clearance. ATC's response was something on the order of 'say your altitude'. I didn't hear your (initial) readback...traffic no longer a factor, climb to 11,000'. No matter who was at fault, if the controller had listened to our altitude readback, this event would not have occurred. Supplemental information from acn 117158: it appears we were cleared to an incorrect altitude and then ATC made a quick recovery!

Title: CLOSE PROX ACR-MLG ACR-MLG IN CLE TCA.
Narrative: FLT WAS CLRED TO DTW VIA CLE 7 DEP, RADAR VECTORS V297, MAINTAIN 5000, EXPECT 16,000 10 MINUTES AFTER DEP. DEP FREQ 118.9, SQUAWK XXXX. DEP CTL 118.9 HANDED US OFF TO 125.15 FOR ROUTINE DEP. AFTER CHECKING IN ON 125.15, WE WERE CLRED TO 8000'. MOMENTS LATER, WE WERE ADVISED OF AN ACR FLT AT 10 O'CLOCK AND 3-4 MILES AT 7000'. AT THIS TIME WE WERE AT 6200' AND THEN QUERIED OUR CLRNC. ATC'S RESPONSE WAS SOMETHING ON THE ORDER OF 'SAY YOUR ALT'. I DIDN'T HEAR YOUR (INITIAL) READBACK...TFC NO LONGER A FACTOR, CLIMB TO 11,000'. NO MATTER WHO WAS AT FAULT, IF THE CTLR HAD LISTENED TO OUR ALT READBACK, THIS EVENT WOULD NOT HAVE OCCURRED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM ACN 117158: IT APPEARS WE WERE CLRED TO AN INCORRECT ALT AND THEN ATC MADE A QUICK RECOVERY!
