While traveling wbound on an IFR flight plan to charleston, wv. Pilot encountered moderate severe turbulence in level ii thunderstorms activity while encountering strong updrafts. Center notified pilot of 300' altitude deviation; pilot reset transponder and recovered to assigned altitude in 8-10 seconds.
