Narrative:

Cruising at FL390, just in the tops, with no radar indication of cell activity and no advanced warning (such as increasing turbulence) we encountered turbulence, autoplt disengaged, and aircraft climbed to FL408 uncontrollably. My radio call was immediate to protect airspace above. I said 'we were being spit out of the top of something' controllers response was 'that's just fine, no conflicting traffic, let us know when you get back down.' event took maybe 3 mins.

Title: ALTDEV ALT EXCURSION -- WX FACTORS AN ACR ENCOUNTERS AN UPDRAFT FROM A TSTM THAT SENDS THE ACFT 1800 FT ABOVE ITS ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative: CRUISING AT FL390, JUST IN THE TOPS, WITH NO RADAR INDICATION OF CELL ACTIVITY AND NO ADVANCED WARNING (SUCH AS INCREASING TURB) WE ENCOUNTERED TURB, AUTOPLT DISENGAGED, AND ACFT CLBED TO FL408 UNCONTROLLABLY. I SAID 'WE WERE BEING SPIT OUT OF THE TOP OF SOMETHING' CTLRS RESPONSE WAS 'THAT'S JUST FINE, NO CONFLICTING TFC, LET US KNOW WHEN YOU GET BACK DOWN.' EVENT TOOK MAYBE 3 MINS.
