Narrative:
I was flying level with my stormscope working, talking to cle approach, when west/O warning from my stormscope or the controller I experienced a sudden increase in the altitude of the airplane (800') and very heavy rain and heavy lightning. I at once grabbed the carburetor heat and the throttle. Suddenly the airplane started to descend and I lost about 1200' down to about 8400' MSL. I added power and climbed to assigned 9000' and leveled off ok. The controller didn't say anything but this was a serious altitude excursion.
