Narrative:
Before leaving osh at or about pnp (local time) jul/sun/89, I monitored departure ATIS 128.75. ATIS said IFR traffic was leaving runway 27. VFR departing 18. They were not allowing IFR departures at the present time due to saturation of the system of IFR. From where I was on the airport, I would have to go around or cross runway 27 in order to reach runway 18. I taxied toward runway 27. A controller with 'paddles' asked if IFR or VFR. I indicated VFR. He then flagged me around waiting aircraft (IFR) and I was on the end of runway 27. The next controller flagged me vigorously toward the opposite end of the runway with an upswept motion. I do not know whether or not he thought I was leaving IFR or he was allowing me to depart that runway in order to expedite departures. I avoided all traffic and turned to the heading VFR traffic were departing as soon as practical.

Title: INEXPERIENCED PLT OF SMA OVERCOME BY THE EVENTS AT OSH GETS CONFUSED AND MAY HAVE TAKEN OFF FROM WRONG RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: BEFORE LEAVING OSH AT OR ABOUT PNP (LOCAL TIME) JUL/SUN/89, I MONITORED DEP ATIS 128.75. ATIS SAID IFR TFC WAS LEAVING RWY 27. VFR DEPARTING 18. THEY WERE NOT ALLOWING IFR DEPS AT THE PRESENT TIME DUE TO SATURATION OF THE SYSTEM OF IFR. FROM WHERE I WAS ON THE ARPT, I WOULD HAVE TO GO AROUND OR CROSS RWY 27 IN ORDER TO REACH RWY 18. I TAXIED TOWARD RWY 27. A CTLR WITH 'PADDLES' ASKED IF IFR OR VFR. I INDICATED VFR. HE THEN FLAGGED ME AROUND WAITING ACFT (IFR) AND I WAS ON THE END OF RWY 27. THE NEXT CTLR FLAGGED ME VIGOROUSLY TOWARD THE OPPOSITE END OF THE RWY WITH AN UPSWEPT MOTION. I DO NOT KNOW WHETHER OR NOT HE THOUGHT I WAS LEAVING IFR OR HE WAS ALLOWING ME TO DEPART THAT RWY IN ORDER TO EXPEDITE DEPS. I AVOIDED ALL TFC AND TURNED TO THE HDG VFR TFC WERE DEPARTING AS SOON AS PRACTICAL.
