Narrative:

I departed from smo on the second leg of my trip home to hwd. I had done my flight planning several days before and drawn the course on the la sectional. However, for the first segment of the flight, I took the la TCA chart out instead. It wasn't until after departure that I noticed the absence of a course line. I soon noticed the bur arsa and in an effort to avoid accidental arsa penetration I shifted my course more to the west. Unfortunately, I had forgotten that after departure from smo the tower had delayed my right turn until I reached the shoreline. Thus, I was already further west than I thought. I climbed to 4900' and leveled off until I reached the edge of the TCA. Unfortunately, I was in the sector southwest of the lax 305 degree right which has a floor of 4000'! By the time I recognized my error, I was outside the TCA boundary.

Narrative: I DEPARTED FROM SMO ON THE SECOND LEG OF MY TRIP HOME TO HWD. I HAD DONE MY FLT PLANNING SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE AND DRAWN THE COURSE ON THE LA SECTIONAL. HOWEVER, FOR THE FIRST SEGMENT OF THE FLT, I TOOK THE LA TCA CHART OUT INSTEAD. IT WASN'T UNTIL AFTER DEP THAT I NOTICED THE ABSENCE OF A COURSE LINE. I SOON NOTICED THE BUR ARSA AND IN AN EFFORT TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL ARSA PENETRATION I SHIFTED MY COURSE MORE TO THE W. UNFORTUNATELY, I HAD FORGOTTEN THAT AFTER DEP FROM SMO THE TWR HAD DELAYED MY RIGHT TURN UNTIL I REACHED THE SHORELINE. THUS, I WAS ALREADY FURTHER W THAN I THOUGHT. I CLBED TO 4900' AND LEVELED OFF UNTIL I REACHED THE EDGE OF THE TCA. UNFORTUNATELY, I WAS IN THE SECTOR SW OF THE LAX 305 DEG R WHICH HAS A FLOOR OF 4000'!
