Narrative:
Why is a level 3 tower/approach that is only 8 mi from dca, 20 from bwi and iad, 35 from pxt (nhk), and within a type 1 TCA have no ARTS or tpx-42? Andrews AFB is a very serious accident waiting to happen. As home of air force one, does our aviator president have any idea of the state of the ATC facility at his airport? No one at andrews seems to have any straight answers for this very straight question: how can we require aircraft within our portion of the TCA to have mode C when our equipment is so old that it can't even read mode C? I am very concerned as I will probably work at adw for many years.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ADW APCH CTL DOES NOT HAVE ARTS OR TPX-42 WHICH WOULD ALLOW THE CTLR TO HAVE ALT READOUT ON THE RADAR SCOPE.
