Narrative:

Uneventful approach and landing to runway 10, just after midnight. During roll-out, while stopping with engines in reverse, heard tower call and say, 'backtrack to taxiway south, cleared to gate.' rogered call. After copilot had aircraft stopped I took over aircraft and turned aircraft around to backtrack on 10. At this time we realized another aircraft was lined up for a landing on runway 10. Tower gave him a go around and we cleared runway. Evidently tower's instructions were 'backtrack on runway 32 to taxiway south and clear to gate.' I have always disliked getting taxi instructions during rollout. You are not geared to listen and the noise of the engines obscures the transmission. In this case, the tower's instructions were also ambiguous since the word 'backtrack' was not appropriate. Instructions should have been, 'cleared to the intersection of 10/32, left turn and taxi down 32 to taxiway south.'

Title: CAPT OF MLG DURING ROLL-OUT ACKNOWLEDGED CLRNC TO 'BACKTRACK' ON RWY. DURING BACKTRACK TWR HAD AN APCHING ACFT GO AROUND.

Narrative: UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LNDG TO RWY 10, JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT. DURING ROLL-OUT, WHILE STOPPING WITH ENGS IN REVERSE, HEARD TWR CALL AND SAY, 'BACKTRACK TO TXWY S, CLRED TO GATE.' ROGERED CALL. AFTER COPLT HAD ACFT STOPPED I TOOK OVER ACFT AND TURNED ACFT AROUND TO BACKTRACK ON 10. AT THIS TIME WE REALIZED ANOTHER ACFT WAS LINED UP FOR A LNDG ON RWY 10. TWR GAVE HIM A GAR AND WE CLRED RWY. EVIDENTLY TWR'S INSTRUCTIONS WERE 'BACKTRACK ON RWY 32 TO TXWY S AND CLR TO GATE.' I HAVE ALWAYS DISLIKED GETTING TAXI INSTRUCTIONS DURING ROLLOUT. YOU ARE NOT GEARED TO LISTEN AND THE NOISE OF THE ENGS OBSCURES THE XMISSION. IN THIS CASE, THE TWR'S INSTRUCTIONS WERE ALSO AMBIGUOUS SINCE THE WORD 'BACKTRACK' WAS NOT APPROPRIATE. INSTRUCTIONS SHOULD HAVE BEEN, 'CLRED TO THE INTXN OF 10/32, LEFT TURN AND TAXI DOWN 32 TO TXWY S.'
