Narrative:

The captain and I had just landed on 28R at san francisco int'l airport. We were instructed by the tower to turn right on lima and hold short of 1R. The captain and I were unable to identify lima because it was not properly marked and we passed it. The tower then advised us to expedite to the high speed taxiway. We had slowed by this point and took the first exit to the fight to expedite clearing the runway. This occurrence happened because the taxiway was not marked so that it was easily identifiable. This occurrence could have been avoided if ATC did not expect us to make as many critical decisions during this critical phase of flight.
