Narrative:

While on vectors for descent into jfk (VFR conditions), we were given clearance from 13,000 to 7000. I read back clearance to 7000'. After being at 7000 for approximately 305 mins, approach said you were cleared to 8000 not 7000, however you are now cleared at 7000. We responded that we read back 7000. When given the original clearance, the crew all understood we were given 7000, and that is what I, non flying pilot, read back. Controller should have paid more attention to readback, if this was not altitude he wanted.
