Narrative:
On ILS final approach to runway 02L at bna just inside the marker, observer on jump seat called 'traffic 12 O'clock.' first officer was just completing channel change to tower and I was checking instruments. Looked up to see a blue and white small aircraft crossing right to left, about 400' away, slightly high. I was responding with controls when I realized we would go below and behind so no violent evasive action took place. Tower supervisor explained that radar had a 1200 VFR code, but no altitude. They did not notify us as they had already sent us to tower frequency. Bna tower said nothing because we were already by the traffic by the time we were in radio contact. It's times like this you really appreciate 3 men in the cockpit. See and be seen maybe the official policy, but it's really unrealistic, in my opinion. A timely communication from approach control would have helped, but I don't know at what point they knew about the traffic.

Title: PLT OF SMA CROSSING APCH PATH OF ILS TO BNA CAUSED NMAC WITH MLG ON ILS APCH.
Narrative: ON ILS FINAL APCH TO RWY 02L AT BNA JUST INSIDE THE MARKER, OBSERVER ON JUMP SEAT CALLED 'TFC 12 O'CLOCK.' F/O WAS JUST COMPLETING CHANNEL CHANGE TO TWR AND I WAS CHKING INSTRUMENTS. LOOKED UP TO SEE A BLUE AND WHITE SMA XING RIGHT TO LEFT, ABOUT 400' AWAY, SLIGHTLY HIGH. I WAS RESPONDING WITH CONTROLS WHEN I REALIZED WE WOULD GO BELOW AND BEHIND SO NO VIOLENT EVASIVE ACTION TOOK PLACE. TWR SUPVR EXPLAINED THAT RADAR HAD A 1200 VFR CODE, BUT NO ALT. THEY DID NOT NOTIFY US AS THEY HAD ALREADY SENT US TO TWR FREQ. BNA TWR SAID NOTHING BECAUSE WE WERE ALREADY BY THE TFC BY THE TIME WE WERE IN RADIO CONTACT. IT'S TIMES LIKE THIS YOU REALLY APPRECIATE 3 MEN IN THE COCKPIT. SEE AND BE SEEN MAYBE THE OFFICIAL POLICY, BUT IT'S REALLY UNREALISTIC, IN MY OPINION. A TIMELY COM FROM APCH CTL WOULD HAVE HELPED,BUT I DON'T KNOW AT WHAT POINT THEY KNEW ABOUT THE TFC.
