Narrative:

I was flying a helicopter, small aircraft X. I was given a clearance from tower to takeoff and cross 25R at mid-field and 500'. At the same time a plane, small aircraft Y, was given a clearance to takeoff from 25R. When I reached mid-field of 25R, I looked over and saw the airplane, and I didn't feel it was safe for me to fly over the airplane at this point. I knew the airplane was faster, and I was waiting for it to get ahead of me so I could make my right turn to the north (north downey departure). At this time tower came on and asked me if I saw the plane. I told him I had him in sight. Tower then asked me if I knew where a north downey departure was. In my mind I knew, but thought maybe something changed because of him asking the question. I replied, 'well, I'm not sure.' tower replied, 'well, I suggest you land and look over your chart.' tower then said to me, 'that was very dangerous, what you just did,' then apologized to the airplane for me. As the plane cleared, I then made my right turn to the north. I saw the plane the whole time and had no intentions of making my right until it was safe. Had I made my right turn at mid-field, I might have been ok--but I didn't feel it to be safe at that point.

Title: LIGHT HELICOPTER DELAYS MID-FIELD CROSSING DUE TO A PERCEIVED CONFLICT WITH DEPARTING TRAFFIC. DOES NOT CONFORM TO THE ATC CLRNC.

Narrative: I WAS FLYING A HELI, SMA X. I WAS GIVEN A CLRNC FROM TWR TO TKOF AND CROSS 25R AT MID-FIELD AND 500'. AT THE SAME TIME A PLANE, SMA Y, WAS GIVEN A CLRNC TO TKOF FROM 25R. WHEN I REACHED MID-FIELD OF 25R, I LOOKED OVER AND SAW THE AIRPLANE, AND I DIDN'T FEEL IT WAS SAFE FOR ME TO FLY OVER THE AIRPLANE AT THIS POINT. I KNEW THE AIRPLANE WAS FASTER, AND I WAS WAITING FOR IT TO GET AHEAD OF ME SO I COULD MAKE MY RIGHT TURN TO THE N (N DOWNEY DEP). AT THIS TIME TWR CAME ON AND ASKED ME IF I SAW THE PLANE. I TOLD HIM I HAD HIM IN SIGHT. TWR THEN ASKED ME IF I KNEW WHERE A N DOWNEY DEP WAS. IN MY MIND I KNEW, BUT THOUGHT MAYBE SOMETHING CHANGED BECAUSE OF HIM ASKING THE QUESTION. I REPLIED, 'WELL, I'M NOT SURE.' TWR REPLIED, 'WELL, I SUGGEST YOU LAND AND LOOK OVER YOUR CHART.' TWR THEN SAID TO ME, 'THAT WAS VERY DANGEROUS, WHAT YOU JUST DID,' THEN APOLOGIZED TO THE AIRPLANE FOR ME. AS THE PLANE CLRED, I THEN MADE MY RIGHT TURN TO THE N. I SAW THE PLANE THE WHOLE TIME AND HAD NO INTENTIONS OF MAKING MY RIGHT UNTIL IT WAS SAFE. HAD I MADE MY RIGHT TURN AT MID-FIELD, I MIGHT HAVE BEEN OK--BUT I DIDN'T FEEL IT TO BE SAFE AT THAT POINT.
