Narrative:
We received a clearance from las tower to proceed into position and hold on runway 25. We remained in position for at least 2-3 mins awaiting takeoff clearance. We then received takeoff clearance and within just a few seconds las tower cancelled our takeoff clearance and told us to remain in position. Then, las tower told air carrier B to make a go around from his approach to runway 25 as we were on the runway. We were then cleared again for takeoff on runway 25 and departed the las airport for dfw. Las tower later informed us upon our final stop in phx to call them and advised us that we had not been cleared into position on runway 25 in las. My first officer had in fact questioned the first clearance into position and upon my request again confirmed our actions. As I mentioned earlier, we had already been in position for 2-3 minutes and then received a takeoff clearance, well before air carrier B was forced to make a go around.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ARTCC CLEARED LGT INTO POSITION AND HOLD, FORGOT HIM AND CLEARED ANOTHER ACR TO LAND ON THE SAME RWY.
Narrative: WE RECEIVED A CLRNC FROM LAS TWR TO PROCEED INTO POSITION AND HOLD ON RWY 25. WE REMAINED IN POSITION FOR AT LEAST 2-3 MINS AWAITING TKOF CLRNC. WE THEN RECEIVED TKOF CLRNC AND WITHIN JUST A FEW SECONDS LAS TWR CANCELLED OUR TKOF CLRNC AND TOLD US TO REMAIN IN POSITION. THEN, LAS TWR TOLD ACR B TO MAKE A GO AROUND FROM HIS APCH TO RWY 25 AS WE WERE ON THE RWY. WE WERE THEN CLRED AGAIN FOR TKOF ON RWY 25 AND DEPARTED THE LAS ARPT FOR DFW. LAS TWR LATER INFORMED US UPON OUR FINAL STOP IN PHX TO CALL THEM AND ADVISED US THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED INTO POSITION ON RWY 25 IN LAS. MY F/O HAD IN FACT QUESTIONED THE FIRST CLRNC INTO POSITION AND UPON MY REQUEST AGAIN CONFIRMED OUR ACTIONS. AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, WE HAD ALREADY BEEN IN POSITION FOR 2-3 MINUTES AND THEN RECEIVED A TKOF CLRNC, WELL BEFORE ACR B WAS FORCED TO MAKE A GO AROUND.
