Narrative:
Normal pushback from gate into alley. APU failed with automatic shutdown. No adverse indications. Unable to restart APU, and therefore was unable to start engines. Requested tow back into gate area for air start and electrical power. Interpretation of MEL, because aircraft was off gate, indicated crew placard of APU was authority/authorized. A normal engine start was accomplished. Aircraft continued (with clearance) pushback, and taxi to takeoff position. Flight continued as normal operation. Continued investigation of occurrence indicated maintenance was required for log book entry at station when aircraft re-entered gate for start.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AFTER PUSH-BACK APU AUTO FAILED. FLT TOWED BACK TO GATE FOR AIR START. FLT CREW INTERPRETED MINIMUM EQUIPMENT LIST AS LEGAL TO DEPART.
Narrative: NORMAL PUSHBACK FROM GATE INTO ALLEY. APU FAILED WITH AUTO SHUTDOWN. NO ADVERSE INDICATIONS. UNABLE TO RESTART APU, AND THEREFORE WAS UNABLE TO START ENGS. REQUESTED TOW BACK INTO GATE AREA FOR AIR START AND ELECTRICAL PWR. INTERP OF MEL, BECAUSE ACFT WAS OFF GATE, INDICATED CREW PLACARD OF APU WAS AUTH. A NORMAL ENG START WAS ACCOMPLISHED. ACFT CONTINUED (WITH CLRNC) PUSHBACK, AND TAXI TO TKOF POS. FLT CONTINUED AS NORMAL OPERATION. CONTINUED INVESTIGATION OF OCCURRENCE INDICATED MAINT WAS REQUIRED FOR LOG BOOK ENTRY AT STATION WHEN ACFT RE-ENTERED GATE FOR START.
