Narrative:

The captain was new (as captain about 2 weeks and 1ST time in aircraft. Also, the first time in the texas area). I got the clearance. I called for taxi, the controller told us to taxi to end of runway 34. Started to taxi south to point B, where the captain stopped well short of the departure end of 34. As we taxied the captain was talking on communication #1 and I was giving the departure briefing and missed what the exact taxi instructions were. The captain asked if we were cleared to taxi in position and hold. I said he told someone to but wasn't sure who. Before asking it the clearance was for us the captain had pulled partly onto the runway. As we did I saw the taxi and landing lights of another aircraft which had been cleared for takeoff. We immediately turned around leaving the runway before the other aircraft had started rolling. The problem arose because of a lack of communication and a captain who was new to the area and had never been to college station and was unsure of the taxi route, especially at night, very early in the morning after being north duty 9 hours and only about 4 1/2 hours sleep.

Title: FLT CREW OF MLG ENTERED RWY WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION BUT LEFT RWY WHEN LIGHTS OF DEPARTING ACFT WERE OBSERVED AT FAR END OF RWY.

Narrative: THE CAPT WAS NEW (AS CAPT ABOUT 2 WEEKS AND 1ST TIME IN ACFT. ALSO, THE FIRST TIME IN THE TEXAS AREA). I GOT THE CLRNC. I CALLED FOR TAXI, THE CTLR TOLD US TO TAXI TO END OF RWY 34. STARTED TO TAXI S TO POINT B, WHERE THE CAPT STOPPED WELL SHORT OF THE DEP END OF 34. AS WE TAXIED THE CAPT WAS TALKING ON COM #1 AND I WAS GIVING THE DEP BRIEFING AND MISSED WHAT THE EXACT TAXI INSTRUCTIONS WERE. THE CAPT ASKED IF WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI IN POSITION AND HOLD. I SAID HE TOLD SOMEONE TO BUT WASN'T SURE WHO. BEFORE ASKING IT THE CLRNC WAS FOR US THE CAPT HAD PULLED PARTLY ONTO THE RWY. AS WE DID I SAW THE TAXI AND LNDG LIGHTS OF ANOTHER ACFT WHICH HAD BEEN CLRED FOR TKOF. WE IMMEDIATELY TURNED AROUND LEAVING THE RWY BEFORE THE OTHER ACFT HAD STARTED ROLLING. THE PROBLEM AROSE BECAUSE OF A LACK OF COM AND A CAPT WHO WAS NEW TO THE AREA AND HAD NEVER BEEN TO COLLEGE STATION AND WAS UNSURE OF THE TAXI ROUTE, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT, VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING AFTER BEING N DUTY 9 HRS AND ONLY ABOUT 4 1/2 HRS SLEEP.
