Narrative:
Departed from bolton field after I had performed a preflight inspection directed by the aircraft owners manual. Fuel was measured as being near 'top-off', oil was within normal limits, and no water was found in fuel. All instruments were reading correctly and were operating normally. My inspection was supervised by instructor who verified my findings. Our flight plan was to depart bolton, perform a full stop at port columbus to use clearance delivery, fly to mansfield, and return to bolton. All of this was to be under flight following. After departure from bolton we were approved for frequency change and we contacted columbus approach and told of our intentions. We were directed direct to port columbus. After landing we taxied to a FBO and shut down. After preflight inspection I contacted clearance delivery and instructor verified my inspection. After takeoff we were directed to contact columbus approach after which I told of our intentions. When radar service was terminated I requested flight following. At mansfield we performed a touch and go and proceeded direct to bolton. 15 mins later mansfield approach handed us over to columbus approach. 5 mins elapsed until the engine began running rough. A moment later it began running normal as before. 2 mins later it started running rough again. Instructor took over and I told columbus approach that we were having engine trouble and that we needed vectoring to the nearest airport. Columbus approach gave us delaware county at 11 mi and bearing 245. We began looking for fields in the event that we would need to do a forced landing. The engine ran rough for several mins. We committed to a field after several more minutes. At this point instructor performed the forced landing procedure. Under a half a minute before touchdown the engine stopped and we cracked the doors open. After we had stopped we found that one of the gauges was reading incorrectly and that there were small particles in the fuel sump.

Title: SMA EXECUTES FORCED LNDG DUE ENGINE FAILURE.
Narrative: DEPARTED FROM BOLTON FIELD AFTER I HAD PERFORMED A PREFLT INSPECTION DIRECTED BY THE ACFT OWNERS MANUAL. OUR FLT PLAN WAS TO DEPART BOLTON, PERFORM A FULL STOP AT PORT COLUMBUS TO USE CLRNC DELIVERY, FLY TO MANSFIELD, AND RETURN TO BOLTON. ALL OF THIS WAS TO BE UNDER FLT FOLLOWING. AFTER DEP FROM BOLTON WE WERE APPROVED FOR FREQ CHANGE AND WE CONTACTED COLUMBUS APCH AND TOLD OF OUR INTENTIONS. WE WERE DIRECTED DIRECT TO PORT COLUMBUS. AFTER LNDG WE TAXIED TO A FBO AND SHUT DOWN. AFTER PREFLT INSPECTION I CONTACTED CLRNC DELIVERY AND INSTRUCTOR VERIFIED MY INSPECTION. AFTER TKOF WE WERE DIRECTED TO CONTACT COLUMBUS APCH AFTER WHICH I TOLD OF OUR INTENTIONS. WHEN RADAR SERVICE WAS TERMINATED I REQUESTED FLT FOLLOWING. AT MANSFIELD WE PERFORMED A TOUCH AND GO AND PROCEEDED DIRECT TO BOLTON. 15 MINS LATER MANSFIELD APCH HANDED US OVER TO COLUMBUS APCH. 5 MINS ELAPSED UNTIL THE ENGINE BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH. A MOMENT LATER IT BEGAN RUNNING NORMAL AS BEFORE. 2 MINS LATER IT STARTED RUNNING ROUGH AGAIN. INSTRUCTOR TOOK OVER AND I TOLD COLUMBUS APCH THAT WE WERE HAVING ENGINE TROUBLE AND THAT WE NEEDED VECTORING TO THE NEAREST ARPT. COLUMBUS APCH GAVE US DELAWARE COUNTY AT 11 MI AND BEARING 245. WE BEGAN LOOKING FOR FIELDS IN THE EVENT THAT WE WOULD NEED TO DO A FORCED LNDG. THE ENGINE RAN ROUGH FOR SEVERAL MINS. WE COMMITTED TO A FIELD AFTER SEVERAL MORE MINUTES. AT THIS POINT INSTRUCTOR PERFORMED THE FORCED LNDG PROC.
