Narrative:
I have just completed flying a trip series that includes a 12:51 day layover in phx. We arrived phx just before noon, local time, and originated the return flight to clt just before midnight, local time. After trying to go to sleep during the afternoon and evening in time to get maybe 6 or 7 hours of sleep prior to the return flight to clt, I found it extremely difficult to fall asleep. Not only was my 'body clock' fouled up, but such things as a maid vacuuming a room above mine, people shutting doors, etc, did not help matters. I finally fell asleep for what must have been a short period of time, as I would determine later. A shower helped me feel pretty normal and rested for a while, but after being in flight for approximately 45 mins to 1 hour. I found myself extremely tired and sleepy. Apparently I hadn't slept very long. Had I known I would have felt that way I would not have signed the release to operate this flight. I firmly believe that these day lay-overs are a joke. Scheduling them indicates a total disregard for the crew as far as rest is concerned. The only concern is to have 2 warm bodies on the aircraft, legal as far as far's are concerned. The potential for disaster is there, as long as 'day lay-overs' are scheduled.

Title: NIGHT FLTS WITH DAY LAYOVERS.
Narrative: I HAVE JUST COMPLETED FLYING A TRIP SERIES THAT INCLUDES A 12:51 DAY LAYOVER IN PHX. WE ARRIVED PHX JUST BEFORE NOON, LCL TIME, AND ORIGINATED THE RETURN FLT TO CLT JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT, LCL TIME. I FINALLY FELL ASLEEP FOR WHAT MUST HAVE BEEN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, AS I WOULD DETERMINE LATER. A SHOWER HELPED ME FEEL PRETTY NORMAL AND RESTED FOR A WHILE, BUT AFTER BEING IN FLT FOR APPROX 45 MINS TO 1 HR. I FOUND MYSELF EXTREMELY TIRED AND SLEEPY. APPARENTLY I HADN'T SLEPT VERY LONG. HAD I KNOWN I WOULD HAVE FELT THAT WAY I WOULD NOT HAVE SIGNED THE RELEASE TO OPERATE THIS FLT. I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THESE DAY LAY-OVERS ARE A JOKE. SCHEDULING THEM INDICATES A TOTAL DISREGARD FOR THE CREW AS FAR AS REST IS CONCERNED. THE ONLY CONCERN IS TO HAVE 2 WARM BODIES ON THE ACFT, LEGAL AS FAR AS FAR'S ARE CONCERNED. THE POTENTIAL FOR DISASTER IS THERE, AS LONG AS 'DAY LAY-OVERS' ARE SCHEDULED.
