Narrative:

We were descending on the civet profile for landing at lax. While passing through approximately 10,800' center called out traffic at 10 O'clock 4 mi at 9200 VFR. We then leveled at 10,000 to cross the arnes intersection at 10,000. We saw the traffic when it was 2-3 mi away. The traffic was pointed to fly directly beneath us, but appeared to be climbing. The first officer, who was flying the aircraft at the time, decided that the traffic was going to come too close, and added power to climb over the traffic. We stopped the climb at 10,300 and cleared the traffic by 600-700' at most. We would have been very close without the climb. The traffic aircraft was an small transport with tip tanks and a dark color. We continued on into lax with no further problems.
