Narrative:
We were descending on the civet profile for landing at lax. While passing through approximately 10,800' center called out traffic at 10 O'clock 4 mi at 9200 VFR. We then leveled at 10,000 to cross the arnes intersection at 10,000. We saw the traffic when it was 2-3 mi away. The traffic was pointed to fly directly beneath us, but appeared to be climbing. The first officer, who was flying the aircraft at the time, decided that the traffic was going to come too close, and added power to climb over the traffic. We stopped the climb at 10,300 and cleared the traffic by 600-700' at most. We would have been very close without the climb. The traffic aircraft was an small transport with tip tanks and a dark color. We continued on into lax with no further problems.

Title: POTENTIAL CONFLICT OCCURS AS A VFR SMT FLIES THROUGH FLIES THROUGH THE APCH PATH OF STAR IN LAX.
Narrative: WE WERE DESCENDING ON THE CIVET PROFILE FOR LNDG AT LAX. WHILE PASSING THROUGH APPROX 10,800' CENTER CALLED OUT TFC AT 10 O'CLOCK 4 MI AT 9200 VFR. WE THEN LEVELED AT 10,000 TO CROSS THE ARNES INTXN AT 10,000. WE SAW THE TFC WHEN IT WAS 2-3 MI AWAY. THE TFC WAS POINTED TO FLY DIRECTLY BENEATH US, BUT APPEARED TO BE CLIMBING. THE F/O, WHO WAS FLYING THE ACFT AT THE TIME, DECIDED THAT THE TFC WAS GOING TO COME TOO CLOSE, AND ADDED POWER TO CLIMB OVER THE TFC. WE STOPPED THE CLIMB AT 10,300 AND CLRED THE TFC BY 600-700' AT MOST. WE WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY CLOSE WITHOUT THE CLIMB. THE TFC ACFT WAS AN SMT WITH TIP TANKS AND A DARK COLOR. WE CONTINUED ON INTO LAX WITH NO FURTHER PROBLEMS.
