Narrative:
We were cleared for 4 stacks visual approach to burbank. About 23 mi out called 'airport in sight' to ATC. We actually were looking at van nuys airport 6 mi west of burbank. We were distracted by conflicting traffic on straight in to van nuys. Burbank and van nuys have parallel runways 6 mi apart and can be easily confused. East coast based crew not familiar with west coast airports. We turned final at van nuys descended to 2600' MSL before burbank tower provided a vector to burbank airport. We entered van nuys air traffic area before turning back towards burbank. FMC data seemed to confirm we had the correct runway, bearing 110 degree 7 mi turning final seemed to agree. There should be a caution note on four stacks visual approach plate that van nuys can be easily confused with burbank. Burbank airport requires special crew qualification for flight crews. This consists of fuzzy pictures and 1 page of text. This training should be a video presentation with narration.

Title: FLT CREW UNFAMILIAR WITH AREA MADE WRONG ARPT APCH TO VNY WHEN THEY WERE CLEARED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO BUR, 6 MI EAST.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR 4 STACKS VISUAL APCH TO BURBANK. ABOUT 23 MI OUT CALLED 'ARPT IN SIGHT' TO ATC. WE ACTUALLY WERE LOOKING AT VAN NUYS ARPT 6 MI W OF BURBANK. WE WERE DISTRACTED BY CONFLICTING TFC ON STRAIGHT IN TO VAN NUYS. BURBANK AND VAN NUYS HAVE PARALLEL RWYS 6 MI APART AND CAN BE EASILY CONFUSED. EAST COAST BASED CREW NOT FAMILIAR WITH WEST COAST ARPTS. WE TURNED FINAL AT VAN NUYS DESCENDED TO 2600' MSL BEFORE BURBANK TWR PROVIDED A VECTOR TO BURBANK ARPT. WE ENTERED VAN NUYS ATA BEFORE TURNING BACK TOWARDS BURBANK. FMC DATA SEEMED TO CONFIRM WE HAD THE CORRECT RWY, BEARING 110 DEG 7 MI TURNING FINAL SEEMED TO AGREE. THERE SHOULD BE A CAUTION NOTE ON FOUR STACKS VISUAL APCH PLATE THAT VAN NUYS CAN BE EASILY CONFUSED WITH BURBANK. BURBANK ARPT REQUIRES SPECIAL CREW QUALIFICATION FOR FLT CREWS. THIS CONSISTS OF FUZZY PICTURES AND 1 PAGE OF TEXT. THIS TRAINING SHOULD BE A VIDEO PRESENTATION WITH NARRATION.
