Narrative:
First officer of flight, and hand flying aircraft. Manually flying V268 to bross intersection with no FMC/FD guidance. Flew through bross intersection and exceeded lateral limits of airway in the turn. Center gave a 360 degree heading and descent to FL180 for traffic avoidance. I was through bross intersection before realizing navigation was still manual and not in FMC/FD 'navigation' mode. I was hand flying aircraft, because of several turns, altitude changes, and in busy area. Captain was looking for VFR target, and thought first officer was in navigation mode (which would indicate the 60 degree turn). First officer thought captain was 'backing him up' in navigation. Recommendation: FAA change preferred route to: balance direct swann intersection direct ood, and eliminate 60 degree turn for navigation. Crews and ATC should take more caution in this area. Supplemental information from acn 124987: while monitoring called VFR traffic at 15,500'. We let our attention lapse and flew through our intercept radial. Captain did not set up cross radial on his VOR/HSI display.

Title: ACR MLG DEVIATED FROM CLRNC ROUTE. TRACK HEADING DEVIATION.
Narrative: F/O OF FLT, AND HAND FLYING ACFT. MANUALLY FLYING V268 TO BROSS INTXN WITH NO FMC/FD GUIDANCE. FLEW THROUGH BROSS INTXN AND EXCEEDED LATERAL LIMITS OF AIRWAY IN THE TURN. CENTER GAVE A 360 DEG HDG AND DSCNT TO FL180 FOR TFC AVOIDANCE. I WAS THROUGH BROSS INTXN BEFORE REALIZING NAVIGATION WAS STILL MANUAL AND NOT IN FMC/FD 'NAV' MODE. I WAS HAND FLYING ACFT, BECAUSE OF SEVERAL TURNS, ALT CHANGES, AND IN BUSY AREA. CAPT WAS LOOKING FOR VFR TARGET, AND THOUGHT F/O WAS IN NAV MODE (WHICH WOULD INDICATE THE 60 DEG TURN). F/O THOUGHT CAPT WAS 'BACKING HIM UP' IN NAVIGATION. RECOMMENDATION: FAA CHANGE PREFERRED ROUTE TO: BAL DIRECT SWANN INTXN DIRECT OOD, AND ELIMINATE 60 DEG TURN FOR NAVIGATION. CREWS AND ATC SHOULD TAKE MORE CAUTION IN THIS AREA. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM ACN 124987: WHILE MONITORING CALLED VFR TFC AT 15,500'. WE LET OUR ATTN LAPSE AND FLEW THROUGH OUR INTERCEPT RADIAL. CAPT DID NOT SET UP CROSS RADIAL ON HIS VOR/HSI DISPLAY.
