Narrative:
No maintenance performed, no fuel added, so did not make log entries prior to departure. Had flown aircraft into city so had already check log on previous leg. Unbeknownst to crew, maintenance had removed log from aircraft. I discovered this in flight. Older aircraft with longer checklists included 'logbook' as a checklist item. New aircraft have very short checklists and much emphasis on flow patterns. Maybe we have gone too far the other way.
