Narrative:

Cleared runway 24/25 profile descent at lax. Lax approach control subsequently cleared us direct smo to cross at 6000'. The clearance was read back and no corrections were added by approach control. A different voice came on the frequency and asked what we were doing. We again reread our clearance. Approach control said 'negative negative negative.' he then instructed us to turn right heading 160 degree and rejoin the profile descent. The original controller was way overloaded. There was no opportunity to query the controller in the event of a possible error.
