Narrative:

Clt TRACON had an unplanned, unexpected total loss of ARTS 3A data for approximately 2 mins during an arrival push with at least 30 aircraft on the scope. Primary radar remained on, but numerous aircraft were being separated via verified altitude readout prior to the ARTS loss. Altitude reports and/or vectors immediately became the only means of ensuring the sep of the aircraft. Maintenance was notified, but no record was made in the 7230-4 (daily log of operations), so the equipment appears more reliable on paper than it actually is.
