Narrative:

While on a flight from dtw-ewr, we were handed off to new york approach on frequency 120.85 and told to monitor the frequency. As we were approaching the inbound approach course to ewr airport, both the copilot and I were questioning why approach hadn't called us to intercept. Only after calling them did we find out we were on the wrong frequency and informed how we upset the new york traffic flow. I feel a handoff with instructions to 'monitor only' is very unsafe and unnecessary for this very situation. In the future I will always check-in on a new frequency. Monitor is ok for ground operations but not flight!
