Narrative:
Descending for ILS 21 at geg, handed off to approach control. Cleared to descend to 4300' MSL by controller. At 4300' controller called and instructed us to maintain 5000' MSL. We immediately climbed out of 4300 for 5000' and explained we were cleared to 4300'. Controller acknowledged. On ground, I called approach control controller on VHF and confirmed our clearance. He responded, 'no problem, controller training in progress, our mistake.' I said, 'fine, just so we understand each other.' I am submitting this report because I have heard other reports of 'controller training' errors in this area (geg) and want to be sure my side of story is 'on the record.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GEG APCH CTLR CHANGES AN ALT ASSIGNMENT WHILE TRAINING IN PROGRESS ATC, AND THE FLT CREW WANTS IT KNOWN THAT THEY DID NOT OVERSHOOT THEIR CLRNC ALT.
Narrative: DSNDING FOR ILS 21 AT GEG, HANDED OFF TO APCH CTL. CLRED TO DSND TO 4300' MSL BY CTLR. AT 4300' CTLR CALLED AND INSTRUCTED US TO MAINTAIN 5000' MSL. WE IMMEDIATELY CLBED OUT OF 4300 FOR 5000' AND EXPLAINED WE WERE CLRED TO 4300'. CTLR ACKNOWLEDGED. ON GND, I CALLED APCH CTL CTLR ON VHF AND CONFIRMED OUR CLRNC. HE RESPONDED, 'NO PROB, CTLR TRNING IN PROGRESS, OUR MISTAKE.' I SAID, 'FINE, JUST SO WE UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER.' I AM SUBMITTING THIS RPT BECAUSE I HAVE HEARD OTHER RPTS OF 'CTLR TRNING' ERRORS IN THIS AREA (GEG) AND WANT TO BE SURE MY SIDE OF STORY IS 'ON THE RECORD.'
