Narrative:
On takeoff we experienced what we initially thought was an engine failure but really ended up being a compressor stall. The #1 engine stalled multiple times and also over temp. We [advised tower] and return for landing. The aircraft was overweight so we computed the required landing distance and made a soft landing. Emergency equipment followed us to the gate. Dispatch was notified and logbook entries were accomplished.[cause was] compressor stall of the #1 engine followed by an over temp.
