Narrative:
I was giving a demonstration ride in small aircraft X to a potential student at evergreen airport, vancouver, wa. After run-up, no aircraft were seen in pattern and no radio broadcasts were heard on unicom. I turned aircraft toward final approach. Prior to takeoff, nothing was visible. At 700' MSL/400' AGL, an small aircraft Y crossed in front of us at a 90 degree angle. It appeared to be 100' or less in front of us. After landing the operator of the small aircraft Y said we had taxied in front of him while he was on short final. He said he had 'gone around' and passed in front of us because he was faster.
