Narrative:

IFR flight plan from eyw to pgd. After passing fmy by approximately 8-10 mi, on 342 degree heading to pgd at an altitude of 3000 or 4000', I cancelled IFR with fmy approach control, who then instructed me to squawk 1200 and contact tpa approach in a few mi if desired. I started a descent and deviated west to sightsee over the barrier islands. The radio was turned down so my passenger and I could talk. Later 22.7 was selected to contact pgd unicom. At that time an airline cut in on the frequency and advised that fmy approach wanted to talk to me. Controller asked where I had been and indicated that I was still IFR. I advised her that cancellation had been effected with the previous controller. My impression was that a lack of handoff or communication existed between controllers.
