Narrative:
I was told by ground control to taxi from the west side FBO to runway 22R. This was to be via txwys whiskey and november. (These are the west and north perimeter txwys.) I was not familiar with the northeast corner of the airport. As a result, I taxied across the displaced threshold of 22R and stopped short of 22L. I thought I was at 22R. Mdw tower asked me if I was at runway 22R. I answered that I thought so. However, I then realized I was actually at 22L, and I informed the tower of this. The tower then cleared me for takeoff on 22L and said nothing else about the matter. Other pilots have also mentioned that mdw txwys are confusing, and they have also made or nearly made similar mistakes. I did not cross an active runway, so I do not think my mistake caused any problems. However, this might not be the case for others in the future. In order to prevent this problem, I would recommend that pilots unfamiliar with mdw txwys get progressive taxi instructions from ground control.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF ATX CLEARED TO 22R AT MDW CROSSED 22R AND HELD SHORT OF 22L.
Narrative: I WAS TOLD BY GND CTL TO TAXI FROM THE W SIDE FBO TO RWY 22R. THIS WAS TO BE VIA TXWYS WHISKEY AND NOVEMBER. (THESE ARE THE W AND N PERIMETER TXWYS.) I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE NE CORNER OF THE ARPT. AS A RESULT, I TAXIED ACROSS THE DISPLACED THRESHOLD OF 22R AND STOPPED SHORT OF 22L. I THOUGHT I WAS AT 22R. MDW TWR ASKED ME IF I WAS AT RWY 22R. I ANSWERED THAT I THOUGHT SO. HOWEVER, I THEN REALIZED I WAS ACTUALLY AT 22L, AND I INFORMED THE TWR OF THIS. THE TWR THEN CLRED ME FOR TKOF ON 22L AND SAID NOTHING ELSE ABOUT THE MATTER. OTHER PLTS HAVE ALSO MENTIONED THAT MDW TXWYS ARE CONFUSING, AND THEY HAVE ALSO MADE OR NEARLY MADE SIMILAR MISTAKES. I DID NOT CROSS AN ACTIVE RWY, SO I DO NOT THINK MY MISTAKE CAUSED ANY PROBLEMS. HOWEVER, THIS MIGHT NOT BE THE CASE FOR OTHERS IN THE FUTURE. IN ORDER TO PREVENT THIS PROBLEM, I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT PLTS UNFAMILIAR WITH MDW TXWYS GET PROGRESSIVE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FROM GND CTL.
