Narrative:
Forgot to cancel IFR before beginning descent in visibility conditions from assigned altitude. We were approaching A1Z from the southwest at night. We descended IFR through an overcast. We began picking up ground contact out of about 5000'. Forward visibility improved to excellent as we descended closer to our clearance altitude of 3100'. ZKC asked us what our intentions were. The PNF told center that we had ground contact, but that we wouldn't cancel IFR until we had the airport or beacon in sight. The PNF was very busy handling communications between center on the #2 radio, unicom on the #1 radio, and prelndg checklist items. We got the airport in sight in good position for a straight in approach to runway 3. The PNF was channeled to the #1 radio (to unicom) and consequently did not transmit to center at the moment we both decided to descend for a landing. By the time communications were established, we were at 2700' on the approach and center was attempting to call us as they noticed the descent below 3100'. Once communications were established, the PNF verified that we were on a descent VFR for landing. The controller acknowledged and IFR was cancelled.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CORP FLT IN FIR DESCENT TO VMC INTENDING TO LAND AT A VFR ARPT FORGETS TO CANCEL IFR PRIOR TO COMMENCING VFR DESCENT AND APCH.
Narrative: FORGOT TO CANCEL IFR BEFORE BEGINNING DSCNT IN VIS CONDITIONS FROM ASSIGNED ALT. WE WERE APCHING A1Z FROM THE SW AT NIGHT. WE DSNDED IFR THROUGH AN OVCST. WE BEGAN PICKING UP GND CONTACT OUT OF ABOUT 5000'. FORWARD VISIBILITY IMPROVED TO EXCELLENT AS WE DSNDED CLOSER TO OUR CLRNC ALT OF 3100'. ZKC ASKED US WHAT OUR INTENTIONS WERE. THE PNF TOLD CENTER THAT WE HAD GND CONTACT, BUT THAT WE WOULDN'T CANCEL IFR UNTIL WE HAD THE ARPT OR BEACON IN SIGHT. THE PNF WAS VERY BUSY HANDLING COMS BTWN CENTER ON THE #2 RADIO, UNICOM ON THE #1 RADIO, AND PRELNDG CHKLIST ITEMS. WE GOT THE ARPT IN SIGHT IN GOOD POS FOR A STRAIGHT IN APCH TO RWY 3. THE PNF WAS CHANNELED TO THE #1 RADIO (TO UNICOM) AND CONSEQUENTLY DID NOT XMIT TO CENTER AT THE MOMENT WE BOTH DECIDED TO DSND FOR A LNDG. BY THE TIME COMS WERE ESTABLISHED, WE WERE AT 2700' ON THE APCH AND CENTER WAS ATTEMPTING TO CALL US AS THEY NOTICED THE DSCNT BELOW 3100'. ONCE COMS WERE ESTABLISHED, THE PNF VERIFIED THAT WE WERE ON A DSCNT VFR FOR LNDG. THE CTLR ACKNOWLEDGED AND IFR WAS CANCELLED.
