Narrative:
On approach to runway 29 at oak at approximately 12 DME from oak we were at 5500'. Approach requested us to slow to follow traffic. We informed him if we slowed at that point we would be unable to descend the aircraft to the proper descent path. He said if we were unable to slow, we would have to do a 360 degree turn. We said we would make the '360.' he then apparently instructed us to turn to '3-6-0 degrees,' which we interpreted as turn 360 degrees, or turn a '360.' in our turn through about heading 160 degrees, he asked us our heading. We replied. He then said to turn left immediately to 050 degrees. He then vectored us around to intercept the localizer and we landed. Apparently there was confusion with the terminology of 'do a 3-60' vs 'turn to 360,' or '360.'

Title: SOME CONFUSION ARISES AS APCH CTLR GIVES AN ACR Z TURN TO 360 DEGREES FOR SPACING ON FINAL AND THE FLT CREW DOES A 360 DEGREE TURN IN COMPLIANCE WITH CLRNC. CTLR CATCHES THEM GOING THROUGH 160 DEGREE HEADING.
Narrative: ON APCH TO RWY 29 AT OAK AT APPROX 12 DME FROM OAK WE WERE AT 5500'. APCH REQUESTED US TO SLOW TO FOLLOW TFC. WE INFORMED HIM IF WE SLOWED AT THAT POINT WE WOULD BE UNABLE TO DSND THE ACFT TO THE PROPER DSCNT PATH. HE SAID IF WE WERE UNABLE TO SLOW, WE WOULD HAVE TO DO A 360 DEG TURN. WE SAID WE WOULD MAKE THE '360.' HE THEN APPARENTLY INSTRUCTED US TO TURN TO '3-6-0 DEGS,' WHICH WE INTERPRETED AS TURN 360 DEGS, OR TURN A '360.' IN OUR TURN THROUGH ABOUT HDG 160 DEGS, HE ASKED US OUR HDG. WE REPLIED. HE THEN SAID TO TURN LEFT IMMEDIATELY TO 050 DEGS. HE THEN VECTORED US AROUND TO INTERCEPT THE LOC AND WE LANDED.
