Narrative:
In the area of monmouth county airport at an altitude of 16500', with VFR altitude setting 3011, heading approximately 210 degrees magnetic direct to acy. I was advised by ny departure control that I had traffic 2 O'clock at 17000' approximately 30 seconds later I observed an small transport jet passing overhead within 200' (estimated). It was a collision course. I checked with approach control and confirmed the altitude setting, and checked the aircraft's (small transport) altitude mode C. Approach responded he was at 16700'. This was as close as I ever want to come to another aircraft in flight. Altitude sep is not enough. The small transport or I should have been given a vector avoid a constant bearing decreasing range situation, in spite of supposedly 500' sep. After 33 yrs of flying, this is my second report in 1 week. The reporter is a graduate of the safety school at monterey.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLOSE PROX GA-SMT GA-LTT ON CORSSING PATHS BOTH VFR.
Narrative: IN THE AREA OF MONMOUTH COUNTY ARPT AT AN ALT OF 16500', WITH VFR ALT SETTING 3011, HDG APPROX 210 DEGS MAGNETIC DIRECT TO ACY. I WAS ADVISED BY NY DEP CTL THAT I HAD TFC 2 O'CLOCK AT 17000' APPROX 30 SECS LATER I OBSERVED AN SMT JET PASSING OVERHEAD WITHIN 200' (ESTIMATED). IT WAS A COLLISION COURSE. I CHKED WITH APCH CTL AND CONFIRMED THE ALT SETTING, AND CHKED THE ACFT'S (SMT) ALT MODE C. APCH RESPONDED HE WAS AT 16700'. THIS WAS AS CLOSE AS I EVER WANT TO COME TO ANOTHER ACFT IN FLT. ALT SEP IS NOT ENOUGH. THE SMT OR I SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN A VECTOR AVOID A CONSTANT BEARING DECREASING RANGE SITUATION, IN SPITE OF SUPPOSEDLY 500' SEP. AFTER 33 YRS OF FLYING, THIS IS MY SECOND RPT IN 1 WK. THE RPTR IS A GRADUATE OF THE SAFETY SCHOOL AT MONTEREY.
