Narrative:
Shortly after departing; I realized that both attitude indicators were inoperative. With the low clouds and darkness I decided to return [to departure airport] and troubleshoot the problem on the ground. Shortly before landing I noticed that both inverter annunciators were illuminated.after landing and exiting the runway; I cycled the inverter switch and found both inverters to be operational. I contacted dispatch to file another flight plan and [continued] without further incident.
