Narrative:

On application of takeoff power a loud bang was heard. At first believing it was a compressor stall, it was decided to abort and investigate. While taxiing it was reported that a passenger had seen what appeared to be metal flying from the wing. We decided to return to the gate for maintenance to check the aircraft. Upon arrival it was learned that #3 tire rim had apparently failed, letting go in an explosive manner which caused the loud noise. A section of the rim was completely missing and the tire, of course, flat--but no abnormality was noted in taxiing the aircraft.
