Narrative:
After departure left turn to heading 100 degree, advised student to climb to 6600 MSL and level out. This was done to stay clear of numerous inbnds for left downwind entry to 17L. Frequency was very congested with traffic and ATC had little or no chance for traffic advisories. Encountered traffic (by above specified separation) realizing aircraft had climbed 100' without student's realizing (my priority was outside vigilance for traffic). Continued en route cross-check.
