Narrative:

Experienced partial radio failure in 2-WAY communication after takeoff. Broken, garbled, etc. Switch to handheld weak and partial reception. Heard 'radar contact, maintain 2 thousand until..mcclellan'. Unable to clarify, maintained 2 thousand and heading until mcclellan was in sight approximately 6 mi, then turned to avoid mcclellan's air traffic area. Received climb instructions 'broken' to airport 'out of 4100''. Did so and cleared the frequency. Continued VFR to destination without incident. Was unsure of track clearance and altitude clearance while in the arsa and was reduced to self reliance and good judgement to resolve situation as there was no prescribed route or altitude given in the initial clearance. Would be better to have a full set of instructions to follow in event of radio failure and not rely on departure to tell me things step by step. As in this case the relaying of information was haphazard at best.
