Narrative:

While on vectors from approach control at 5000', heading 045 degree, traffic was called out at 5200', 11-12 O'clock less than a mile. Looking up I saw a low-wing single-engine type aircraft. I immediately descended to 4700' and the aircraft passed just slightly, overhead. The controller was handling several aircraft at once and fortunately he spotted the other aircraft and was able to call him out. The following day I was contacted by the FAA and told that the aircraft had been tracked and the owner denied being airborne at the time.
