Narrative:
At 10000' copilot accelerated to 300 KTS and engaged the autoplt with altitude capture armed and clearance to 13000'. At 12500' the 'stabilizer out of trim' light illuminated steady and the elevator pitch indicators were displaced more than one needle width down. The autoplt did not capture 13000'. Copilot disengaged the autoplt and both he and captain had to push forward forcefully to descend back to 13000'. Maximum deviation from assigned altitude was 13350'. While pushing forward on yoke, copilot attempted to trim nose down using cruise trim switch, but there was no response. Stabilizer trim brake appeared to be engaged. After raising the trim brake knob, the main electric trim worked normally, but cruise trim still inoperative. Captain elected to return to cvg. All abnormal and normal checklists were accomplished to an uneventful approach and landing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LGT RETURNED CVG BECAUSE CRUISE TRIM (LOW SPEED) SEEMED TO BE INOPERATIVE, CAUSING AN ALT OVERSHOT.
Narrative: AT 10000' COPLT ACCELERATED TO 300 KTS AND ENGAGED THE AUTOPLT WITH ALT CAPTURE ARMED AND CLRNC TO 13000'. AT 12500' THE 'STAB OUT OF TRIM' LIGHT ILLUMINATED STEADY AND THE ELEVATOR PITCH INDICATORS WERE DISPLACED MORE THAN ONE NEEDLE WIDTH DOWN. THE AUTOPLT DID NOT CAPTURE 13000'. COPLT DISENGAGED THE AUTOPLT AND BOTH HE AND CAPT HAD TO PUSH FORWARD FORCEFULLY TO DSND BACK TO 13000'. MAX DEVIATION FROM ASSIGNED ALT WAS 13350'. WHILE PUSHING FORWARD ON YOKE, COPLT ATTEMPTED TO TRIM NOSE DOWN USING CRUISE TRIM SWITCH, BUT THERE WAS NO RESPONSE. STAB TRIM BRAKE APPEARED TO BE ENGAGED. AFTER RAISING THE TRIM BRAKE KNOB, THE MAIN ELECTRIC TRIM WORKED NORMALLY, BUT CRUISE TRIM STILL INOP. CAPT ELECTED TO RETURN TO CVG. ALL ABNORMAL AND NORMAL CHKLISTS WERE ACCOMPLISHED TO AN UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LNDG.
