Narrative:

ZNY on frequency 135.75 issued a descent clearance from cruise to cross etx at 10000' and 250 KTS. As we leveled at 10000', center called back and said the crossing restriction was etx at 11000' and 250 KTS. First officer restated the clearance as we had received it and as he had originally read it back, which was 'east tx at 1-0-thousand at 200 and 50 KTS.' center stated: 'no problem, climb and maintain 11000,' which we did. No traffic incursion or conflict. As long as there is verbal communication between human beings with no hard copy verification (such as an ACARS message perhaps) these problems are sure to occur.

F/O RESTATED THE CLRNC AS WE HAD RECEIVED IT AND AS HE HAD ORIGINALLY READ IT BACK, WHICH WAS 'E TX AT 1-0-THOUSAND AT 200 AND 50 KTS.' CENTER STATED: 'NO PROB, CLB AND MAINTAIN 11000,' WHICH WE DID. NO TFC INCURSION OR CONFLICT. AS LONG AS THERE IS VERBAL COM BTWN HUMAN BEINGS WITH NO HARD COPY VERIFICATION (SUCH AS AN ACARS MESSAGE PERHAPS) THESE PROBS ARE SURE TO OCCUR.
