Narrative:
We were doing the NDB 13 approach as part of a long cross-country. Due to other traffic we were told to hold over the NDB at 4000 feet. After a few turns in holding I noticed a traffic target show up on the mfd (multi-function display) about 700-800 feet above us and less than 1 mile that appeared to be spiraling down to the airport. I started looking for the traffic and did not see them until a few seconds later when they were approximately only a few hundred feet from us. We immediately started a turn away from the traffic and were able to avoid them.
