Narrative:
We were with ont approach VFR on top through banning pass at 9500' MSL, navigating on V388 pdz 072030. Upon exiting ont's airspace, we were told that radar services were terminated and to contact psp approach 126.7 within a few mi, with the current squawk code. I understood this to mean that the fir clearance was cancelled and to proceed to psp VFR with a VFR arrival, making sure we had contacted psp arsa before proceeding west. Therefore, a VFR descent was initiated to 5500' MSL. Upon contacting psp arsa, while passing through 8500' MSL, was asked what our instructions had been from ont. He said I was still IFR. We were cleared visibility 2T downwind 30, and before going over to psp tower, I asked if there was a need to call them. Answer: no.
