Narrative:
I was cleared for the VOR-23 approach at mbs, and established on the final approach course inbound. This was a practice approach under VFR/VMC with qualified safety pilot on board. Tower asked my intentions after the VOR-23, and I replied I wanted the ILS-23 to a full stop. At this point I was at MDA (1220) and 2 mi final on the VOR-23. Tower said I was 'cleared for the option', and gave me a new heading (320) and altitude (2400). I then turned to 320 and initiated a climb. Tower asked my heading, and I replied 320. Tower said I should still be on the final approach course inbound, and told me to continue 320 vectors to ILS-23. I realized immediately that even though this was a 'practice' approach under VFR, I must still complete the approach all the way to the map (in this case, mbs VOR on field).
