Narrative:
We were being vectored for a visual approach to runway 4 at elp. We were at 6500' heading 270 degree airspeed 210 KTS. The elp approach controller informed us that we had a VFR aircraft at 12 O'clock and 5 mi at 6600'. About this time the first officer said that he had the aircraft and that he was heading straight at us at our altitude. He then turned left and descended to 6200' approximately. I informed approach control what we were doing and at the same time the VFR traffic saw us and also turned left. Small aircraft informed the controller that he had vectored him almost into a commercial jet. The controller said that he had tried to vector the VFR traffic away from us but he wouldn't take the vectors. As stated, we passed within 400' vertically and less than 1000' horizontally. I talked to the controller on the phone the next morning and discussed the situation. There is a VFR corridor that approach control uses which brings the aircraft very close to any aircraft making an approach to runway 4. I believe that policy should be checked before other problems arise.

Title: MLG AND SMA IN CONFLICT IN ELP AREA.
Narrative: WE WERE BEING VECTORED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 4 AT ELP. WE WERE AT 6500' HDG 270 DEG AIRSPEED 210 KTS. THE ELP APCH CTLR INFORMED US THAT WE HAD A VFR ACFT AT 12 O'CLOCK AND 5 MI AT 6600'. ABOUT THIS TIME THE F/O SAID THAT HE HAD THE ACFT AND THAT HE WAS HDG STRAIGHT AT US AT OUR ALT. HE THEN TURNED LEFT AND DESCENDED TO 6200' APPROX. I INFORMED APCH CTL WHAT WE WERE DOING AND AT THE SAME TIME THE VFR TFC SAW US AND ALSO TURNED LEFT. SMA INFORMED THE CTLR THAT HE HAD VECTORED HIM ALMOST INTO A COMMERCIAL JET. THE CTLR SAID THAT HE HAD TRIED TO VECTOR THE VFR TFC AWAY FROM US BUT HE WOULDN'T TAKE THE VECTORS. AS STATED, WE PASSED WITHIN 400' VERTICALLY AND LESS THAN 1000' HORIZONTALLY. I TALKED TO THE CTLR ON THE PHONE THE NEXT MORNING AND DISCUSSED THE SITUATION. THERE IS A VFR CORRIDOR THAT APCH CTL USES WHICH BRINGS THE ACFT VERY CLOSE TO ANY ACFT MAKING AN APCH TO RWY 4. I BELIEVE THAT POLICY SHOULD BE CHECKED BEFORE OTHER PROBLEMS ARISE.
