Narrative:
Flight alb to syr was cleared into position and hold. I acknowledged the clearance to position and hold. As we lined up onto the runway the captain applied takeoff power beginning the takeoff roll. Before I could act, the tower yelled stop over the radio. I applied full braking and the captain removed power. We had rolled less than 500'. The tower then gave us takeoff clearance and we took off from that point. The captain said, 'I asked you if we were cleared for takeoff, and when you did not answer I thought that meant we were cleared to take off.' I also believe he was in a rush and 'heard' what he wanted to hear. Cockpit crew coordination does not work with 1 participant.
