Narrative:
With first controller from la approach we were told to intercept the 24L localizer and proceed inbound, keep up our best speed. Caution for the small aircraft jet aircraft on 24R localizer. We did as asked and passed the jet as he started to decelerate. We were then told a new frequency for approach. We changed frequency. The controller said not to pass the small aircraft jet. We told him that we had passed him. He said that was fine. He then started to reduce us to 180 KTS, account we were following an large transport on short final. We spotted the large transport in front of us and followed him. (We did not have the airport in sight.) as we got to a mile and a half final the small aircraft jet asked if we were going to the left or the right? We then noticed that the large transport was going for the right runway (this is the same aircraft that we were told to follow). We turned towards the left runway and landed. We contacted the tower again after landing and asked if there was a problem and he said 'I guess not...no.' I think that while we were still with approach, the tower cleared the large transport to sidestep to 24R. I also feel that this type of approach is a dangerous one during periods of reduced visibility.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LTT CLEARED TO PASS AN MLG JET, FOLLOW AN LGT JET ON LOCALIZER 24R. LGT LANDED 24R, LTT FLT CREW LANDED 24L.
Narrative: WITH FIRST CTLR FROM LA APCH WE WERE TOLD TO INTERCEPT THE 24L LOC AND PROCEED INBND, KEEP UP OUR BEST SPEED. CAUTION FOR THE SMA JET ACFT ON 24R LOC. WE DID AS ASKED AND PASSED THE JET AS HE STARTED TO DECELERATE. WE WERE THEN TOLD A NEW FREQ FOR APCH. WE CHANGED FREQ. THE CTLR SAID NOT TO PASS THE SMA JET. WE TOLD HIM THAT WE HAD PASSED HIM. HE SAID THAT WAS FINE. HE THEN STARTED TO REDUCE US TO 180 KTS, ACCOUNT WE WERE FOLLOWING AN LGT ON SHORT FINAL. WE SPOTTED THE LGT IN FRONT OF US AND FOLLOWED HIM. (WE DID NOT HAVE THE ARPT IN SIGHT.) AS WE GOT TO A MILE AND A HALF FINAL THE SMA JET ASKED IF WE WERE GOING TO THE LEFT OR THE RIGHT? WE THEN NOTICED THAT THE LGT WAS GOING FOR THE RIGHT RWY (THIS IS THE SAME ACFT THAT WE WERE TOLD TO FOLLOW). WE TURNED TOWARDS THE LEFT RWY AND LANDED. WE CONTACTED THE TWR AGAIN AFTER LNDG AND ASKED IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM AND HE SAID 'I GUESS NOT...NO.' I THINK THAT WHILE WE WERE STILL WITH APCH, THE TWR CLRED THE LGT TO SIDESTEP TO 24R. I ALSO FEEL THAT THIS TYPE OF APCH IS A DANGEROUS ONE DURING PERIODS OF REDUCED VISIBILITY.
