Narrative:
We cleared R25R at lax and were cleared to taxi to the gate via K taxiway (the inner taxiway). Almost immediately, ground instructed/requested that we hold our present position, which was still on the high speed exit, but the nose of our aircraft was on taxiway J (the outer taxiway). To our left an air carrier widebody transport was crossing the 25 runways approximately 100 yds down the runway. He turned onto taxiway J and was headed in our direction on the taxiway. There was an adjoining taxiway just to our left that could be used to join the inner taxiway, and I assumed that was his plan. Both the first officer and I realized at the same time that he was coming right at us. We signaled the first officer in the widebody transport to stop, which they did--otherwise their right wing would have struck the top of our aircraft. The widebody transport had to be tugged back so we could continue to the gate. Neither the first officer nor I heard the widebody transport contact ground control prior to making the quick stop. He may have, but it seems like communications contributed to the problem, as well as their not properly estimating how close we were to the taxiway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CRITICAL GND CONFLICT AS WDB ALMOST RUNS RIGHT WING INTO MLG HOLDING PARTIALLY ON THE TXWY.
Narrative: WE CLRED R25R AT LAX AND WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO THE GATE VIA K TXWY (THE INNER TXWY). ALMOST IMMEDIATELY, GND INSTRUCTED/REQUESTED THAT WE HOLD OUR PRESENT POS, WHICH WAS STILL ON THE HIGH SPD EXIT, BUT THE NOSE OF OUR ACFT WAS ON TXWY J (THE OUTER TXWY). TO OUR LEFT AN ACR WDB WAS XING THE 25 RWYS APPROX 100 YDS DOWN THE RWY. HE TURNED ONTO TXWY J AND WAS HEADED IN OUR DIRECTION ON THE TXWY. THERE WAS AN ADJOINING TXWY JUST TO OUR LEFT THAT COULD BE USED TO JOIN THE INNER TXWY, AND I ASSUMED THAT WAS HIS PLAN. BOTH THE F/O AND I REALIZED AT THE SAME TIME THAT HE WAS COMING RIGHT AT US. WE SIGNALED THE F/O IN THE WDB TO STOP, WHICH THEY DID--OTHERWISE THEIR RIGHT WING WOULD HAVE STRUCK THE TOP OF OUR ACFT. THE WDB HAD TO BE TUGGED BACK SO WE COULD CONTINUE TO THE GATE. NEITHER THE F/O NOR I HEARD THE WDB CONTACT GND CTL PRIOR TO MAKING THE QUICK STOP. HE MAY HAVE, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE COMS CONTRIBUTED TO THE PROB, AS WELL AS THEIR NOT PROPERLY ESTIMATING HOW CLOSE WE WERE TO THE TXWY.
